# Chapter 6: Bathrooms

UD BATHROOMS ARE BEAUTIFUL! This is often the most stigmatized space for aesthetics; it doesn't have to look like a sterile hospital bathroom. This chapter is full of examples that demonstrate that.

## Section 6.1: General&#x20;

This section will include **storage, lighting, color contrast!** At least 75% of storage should be located between 18-48" (46-122cm) from the floor. Any open shelving should be shallow and cabinets should have pull out drawers so it’s easy to reach everything. Cabinet hardware should be easy to use. See below for beautiful & functional bathroom storage options!&#x20;

Indirect lighting that illuminates the floor without visible bare bulbs or translucent covers is ideal. Bathroom elements should have ample color contrast (example - the hardware versus cabinet color). See examples below.&#x20;

Floating cabinets are a great option since you can mount them at whatever height works best for you and they won’t take up additional floor space.&#x20;

The vast majority of bathroom storage cabinets I found & linked above in section 6.1.1 have knobs, which can be really difficult to use for someone with decreased fine motor function. Any hardware that allows someone to put their whole hand through the opening to pull with their palm will be the easiest.

* You can easily replace hardware on a furniture piece or bathroom drawers/cabinets by buying hardware separately. Sites offer a variety of sizes so make sure you measure to order the hardware that will fit your piece!&#x20;

A trend in recent years has been monotone, all-white spaces. Sure, they are clean looking & unobjectionable to many BUT this is a huge barrier for individuals with low vision or cognitive impairments.

## Section 6.2: Under-Sink Clearance

Bathroom sinks need ample clearance underneath for seated access (considering height, width, & depth - see code for specific measurements). There are multiple ways to do this aesthetically even if plumbing must be exposed due to space constraints. See below for ideas & product recs to accomplish this! &#x20;

Recessing **flipper doors** are a clever design "hack" to allow for clearance when needed without sacrificing the look of traditional lower cabinetry when the doors are closed. This is the same approach discussed in Section [5.2.2](https://style.universaldesign.org/chapters/pages/-Lhfc3l32fdHjTT2ZkYR#id-5.2.2-concealed-clearance) for kitchen cabinetry.&#x20;

The average height of toilets in homes is 14-16". However, a toilet seat 17-19" (43-48cm) high is generally the best option for accessibility. It is within the same range as most chairs.

## Section 6.5: Showers

For true universal design, the best bathing option is a shower with a flush, zero-step / no-curb entrance. All showers should be constructed without built-in seats to allow any future user to choose a shower seat that works best for them and preserve floor space. See examples below!&#x20;

### 6.5.2 No Integrated Seats

Many people need to sit while showering and this is VERY important for accessibility. Though, a built-in seat that permanently takes up space on a shower floor can actually be more barrier than support. Shower chairs should be **user-specific** as they come in all shapes, sizes, & materials. Also, **those who use roll-in shower chairs need the floor space**!&#x20;

**Even Slope/No Center Drain:**&#x20;

Seats that are set on the floor need to be stable. This requires an even floor. Center drains often result in each floor side sloping toward the middle. While good for water drainage, the seat will wobble if a seat isn't centered (seat position can't be required). The better solution is to design the shower with the drain on the side under the shower head.

Everyone gets frustrated when the shower seems impossible to turn on. Hardware should be operable with one hand while not requiring pinching, twisting, or grasping. Keep it simple; single-touch faucets or lever-based hardware is best!&#x20;

While it's generally expected that hot is to the left and cold is to the right, this isn't always intuitive. **Clearly visible indicators enhance safety.**

Both examples above have a form of temperature indication (letters or colors). If your faucet of choice does not have this, or you'd like to make it even more clear, consider adding on **color/symbol/letter** decals.&#x20;

## Section 6.6: Grab Bars

These have come a LONG way from traditional stainless steal options that we see in every public accessible bathroom. There are endless options on the market that allow grab bars to be a seamlessly incorporated, stylish accessory to your bathroom. See below for examples!&#x20;

### 6.6.1 Blocking&#x20;

The code explains that grab bars are not a requirement for UD. Rather, the appropriate prep during building should allow for grab bars to be easily installed around the **toilet & shower** in the future when need be. This means adding wood blocking between studs as grabs bars need to be screwed into wood (not just drywall!) so they are sturdy. See this video below for more info.&#x20;
