## Section 1.2: Covered Parking
Parking areas should be covered and enclosed (i.e., a garage) for protection from the weather, security, and safety. If a garage is not an option, the code suggests a car port for cover. These can still be super aesthetic! There are lots of options to find one that looks harmonious with the exterior of your home. See examples below.

Covered and enclosed parking areas (garages) create protection from sun, wind, rain, and snow. Loading and unloading items under a covered structure is easier and more comfortable whether or not a health condition exists. Garages that can be closed and secured also provide extra safety.

## Section 1.3: Parking Surface
Many people choose pavers like cobblestones or bricks for their driveway due to the visual appeal. When designing for universal access, you want to opt for asphalt or concrete. Not only is this the most accessible, but it is also a more affordable option than pavers. **You can still achieve a stylish look with concrete or asphalt using the techniques below**.

Asphalt or concrete parking surfaces are the best option for people who rely on support (wheelchairs, canes, etc.) for mobility and are less likely to cause someone to trip, as they are smooth when well-maintained.
Small cracks, gaps, or bumps that may seem insignificant can cause a wheel or foot to get caught and throw off someone's balance, creating a safety hazard for anyone using mobility devices. For anyone using objects with wheels – strollers, luggage, etc. – it will be easier if smooth surfaces are present.

This clever technique involves removing the top layer of concrete to reveal the rocks underneath for added visual appeal.

* The texture of the exposed rocks increases slip resistance!
* One of the articles linked above discusses pros and cons to different types of sealers for aggregate concrete. Notably, you want a penetrating sealer (vs. non-penetrating or topical) as this preserves the texture and prevents a slippery surface from forming. You can also include a slip-resistant additive to your sealer.

## Section 1.4: Lighting
The entire parking area needs to be well lit with multiple sources of light! There should be automatic lighting to increase safety at night (motion sensor activated, on a timer, etc.). Indirect lighting and no bare bulbs/translucent covers are useful strategies for reducing eye strain/glare. No one wants to stare straight into a light source. See examples below.
